The Importance of Design in Video Production

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works. - Steve Jobs”

Design is a crucial aspect of video production. Video production is the process of creating a visual product, from the development stage to distribution. Production involves making decisions at both the artistic and productive levels, with limitations only given by the available technical means (budget and equipment) and programming requirements.

Composition is the way in which the video is framed. Composition is as important for video as it is for still photography. One of the most basic composition rules is the Rule of Thirds. When looking at your subjects, with Live View mode on the LCD screen, imagine a “tic-tac-toe” grid over the scene. Observe where the lines intersect. The rule of thirds suggests that those points are the best places to position your subject. Doing so will generally result in a pleasing and balanced composition.

In addition to the Rule of Thirds, there are other composition rules that can help improve the design of a video. For example, the Horizon Rule suggests that the horizon should be aligned with one of the horizontal lines of the “tic-tac-toe” grid. The Movement Rule suggests that the subject should be looking towards empty space in the frame, to give a sense of movement and direction.

Another important aspect of design in video production is the use of color. Color can be used to create different emotional states in the viewer, to highlight important elements in the scene or to create visual contrasts. It is important to choose an appropriate color palette for each project and use it consistently throughout the video.

Typography also plays an important role in video design. Choosing an appropriate font can help convey the desired message and improve text readability on screen. It is important to choose a font that is easily readable and fits with the style and tone of the video.
